Golf Swing – Here’s 3 Quick Ways to Set a Solid Foundation For a Better Golf Swing

By Allen Royal

Standing straight and standing tall can be a good thing under certain circumstances. In golf, too straight and upright is not a good thing. It probably won’t surprise you that posture is crucial to making sure you get consistency and power in your strokes effortlessly for 18 holes. This article will give you some pointers to remember to help you.

  • “P” = Posture: The golf swing is not an isolated action.

It involves multiple actions that should all work effectively together. Think about it. It all starts with your feet, moves to your legs and knees, goes on to your hips, then the torso, and travels through the arms and shoulders. All these elements need to coordinate in a smooth, flexible rotation to achieve solid impact with the golf ball. Proper posture is the framework that organizes all these events and sets the table for the next motions.

  • “SA” = Spine Angle: This semi-mystery term is where you

position your body to complete the golf swing in the most efficent way possible. It is the angle your torso makes with the ground. Depending on your height and what club you are using, the angle should be about 30-45 degrees. The taller you are and the shorter the club you’re using, the more angle there will be. By flexing your knees and bending at the waist you can position your head approximately over your feet to be in a solid spine angle position. Other elements may enter the equation, but with experimentation you should find the angle that is most comfortable for your personal swing. Remember to keep your spine straight to prepare for the next actions.

  • “C” = Core: The core of the body from the hips through

the shoulders is the focal point for the stability of your swing. Some balance and flexibility exercises along with abdominal crunches (if you are able to do them) are a good starting point. You need to develope a level of strength that will enable your endurance for the entire round so you can finish as strong as you started.

It turns out Mom was right. Start with that good posture she harped on. You should keep your spine straight. Bend at the hip to get your proper spine angle and rotate around that central core to execute a strong, smooth swing. Keeping these three basic elements in mind should take you a long way to grreater distance and accuracy and fewer aches and pains from bad golf posture.
