Golf 101 Odyssey Black Series 1 Review

Review ODYSSEY BLACK SERIES 1

TECH STORY
The milled soft 1025 carbon-steel head is fitted with a tungsten flange to move weight back and low for a high moment of inertia and improved roll. A double-layer face insert (a resilient elastomer behind a thin, firm outer layer) provides optimal feel, and the loft fits the putter’s center of gravity. The series includes two blade-like models, the #1 (a classic Anser style) and the #9 (the half-mallet look preferred by Phil Mickelson).

PLAYER COMMENTS
“This is the shiny little birthday present that I’ll be hoping for. . . . This putter has great balance. Rolls true. . . . The firm insert gives it a nice, confident feel. . . . It’s a solid putter, and the response on the mis-hits is there — especially on toe hits. . . . The chrome color is sharp without causing glare, and the roll on this putter is otherworldly.”

HOT
The best-looking Odyssey on the market, but this isn’t just another high-end blade. It’s got some serious technological horsepower.

NOT
Some might have to adjust to its soft sound.

CLEVELAND CG14

STREET PRICE: Lowest Price Online

TECH STORY
Featuring the same zip-groove technology as the CG12, the user-friendlier CG14 has a visco-elastic-polymer insert in its back cavity to soften vibration. In addition, it has just a hint of offset to accommodate a more forceful downward stroke through the turf.

PLAYER COMMENTS
“Cleveland is the Lamborghini of wedges. It looks really good in the sand, and the weight is well-balanced. Nice spin and biting action around the green… It did everything I tried to do… Very soft at impact. Excellent out of the sand, and I’m a terrible bunker player — just easy to hit every time. I love the soft, forged feel. Works very well around the green, from thick and short grass. The clubhead comes out of any condition perfectly.”

HOT
In truth, a lot of players might feel more comfortable with this, the junior partner in the Cleveland wedge firm. It seems easier to launch, the feel is softer, and the grooves live up to their name.

NOT
Fewer loft/bounce options than CG12. Why?
