Tips to Improved Putting

With a little practice and confident you can Putt like Tiger Woods.

Most golfers who struggle with their short game should make improved putting their first priority. Although chipping and pitching are very important, especially in getting out of the rough, bunkers and other hazards, you may not have to use these skills on every hole. Whereas putting is a skill that is as important as a good drive since you will have to employ it on every green of every hole.

There are a wide variety of problems most duffers face while putting. They can all be boiled down to missing putts to the left or right and leaving balls short or conversely, too long. This makes it sound as if putting is one of the simplest acts and that golfers should be advised to “Just put the ball in the hole!” Of course, as any person who has ever played any form of golf, even miniature golf knows it isn’t quite that easy.

There are so many things that affect where the ball goes when it is struck on the putting green. Hitting the ball too high or too low can affect the trajectory. The way the golfer swings the club, where he or she places their feet, how they stand, where their eyes focus and how well they concentrate . . . . . any one of these things can turn a good putt into a horrendous one.

First, you must realize that all of the aforementioned aspects and many, many more go into every putt. One tip for those who can’t seem to control the distance or if you always miss even level putts to one side or the other is to use a common household adhesive bandage. By sticking the bandage to the bottom one-third of your putter, you will be able to hear the thud when you are hitting the ball too low on the putter.

If you consistently hit the bandage instead of the putter face it usually means that you are twisting your wrists. If you keep practicing this tip you will also notice that your stroke will become level, which will improve your direction as well as your distance.

A good putting stroke is also one that is straight and level. A great exercise to carry out this tip is to practice swinging your club over a straight guide. Use another club shaft or a flagstick. Place your club in the starting position and mark that spot on your guide with a line or a piece of tape.

Practice swinging the putter in a straight line over your guide. If this motion of keeping a straight line feels uncomfortable or it is hard to stick to, then you know that your normal swing is curving, which is having a negative effect on your putt. Once your are used to using the guide, take it away and continue the drill by hitting balls into the cup.

Once you have put all of these tips together, you should practice them every chance that you can in order to get used to the routine. Eventually, you will be putting like a pro and all of your golfing partners will want you to give them putting tips.

How many rounds did you not enjoy last season? Figure on not enjoying about the same number of rounds this season. Instead of wasting your time not enjoying a round of golf, use the time to practice so that during those rounds you actually enjoy, you’ll enjoy them more because you’ll be better at it.
