The Amazing Views when Golfing in New Mexico

Golf in New Mexico was once a very good kept secret. But until just recent that is not the case. Before the word got out about golf in New Mexico, people would come here to visit Carsbad Caverns or the galleries in Santa Fe. Golfing in New Mexico has become a well known golf destination for high desert courses of the Southwest.

There are four distinct destinations for golf in New Mexico, each boasting a cluster of high-quality, low-cost courses with great scenery and shot values.

Northern section for golf New Mexico: Taos Country Club, Black Mesa Golf Club near Espanola and Marty Sanchez Links de Santa Fe are all modified desert-links courses winding across the high plateau. There are a couple of course in the Taos area and a nice mountain course that is east of Taos is Angel Fire golf club. The Trent Jones family name is no stranger to New Mexico golf. Just south of Santa Fe is Pueblo de Cochiti golf course. Originally designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., but has recently been updated by his son, Robert Trent Jones III.

Golf in New Mexico’s central area: On the other side of the Sandia mountains located east of Albuquerque is the crown jewel of the central golf courses which is Paa-Ko ridge golf club. North of town are several of the finest resort courses in the state, they are Santa Ana golf club, its sister course and the host of the 2009 Professional club pros championship Twin Warriors golf club and finally is Sandia golf club. Located just a short distance from the airport is the University of New Mexico Championship golf course. The NCAA has visited this course in the past because of the hilly challenges that the course presents. Only seven minutes south on Interstate 25 is the 27-hole Isleta Eagle Golf Course, part of the Isleta Casino & Resort.

Southeast section for golfing in New Mexico: You have heard of the gun slinger Billy the Kid right? He did most of his damage in this are of the state, mostly in Lincoln county, NM and this is where Ruidoso is located. Located close by is the Links at Sierra Blanca, Cree meadows and Rainmakers. There is also the Inn of the Mountain Gods and all are Ted Robinson designs. All are mountain courses rising and falling through Ponderosa pines. In Roswell, where two aliens bought it in a 1947 space-ship crash, play the Spring River and New Mexico Military Institute golf courses. In Carlsbad, you’ll Lake Carlsbad Golf Course, a low-cost muni gem.

Golfing in New Mexico’s Southern section: Between Las Cruces and Socorro, N.M., lie a handful of true bargains, starting with New Mexico Tech Golf Course, a tight parkland layout in Socorro. Down the Interstate south from Socorro is Elephant Butte, NM and the Sierra del Rio golf course that is in the folds of the Sonorran Desert. In Las Cruces are New Mexico State University and Sonoma Ranch Golf Club. In nearby El Paso, Texas, is Butterfield Trail, the only Tom Fazio design for hundreds of miles in all directions.

Out of the way but worth the drive if you want to explore golf in New Mexico elsewhere: Farmington New Mexico hosts one of the top rated courses in New Mexico and that is Pinon Hills golf course located in the famous four corners area; Southwest golf in New Mexico is the Silver City golf course; west from Albuquerque about 40 miles is Grants, New Mexico and the Coyote del Malpais golf course.

As you can see golf in New Mexico in the land of enchantment is something that you need to try and enjoy.
